Will It Hurt Having Dental Implants Placed?

Dr. Michael Sohl Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry

Dental Implants

It’s sort of the opposite of having teeth pulled. But does it hurt as much as having teeth pulled? For most people, the answer to this is no. You’ll likely experience noticeably less discomfort in having dental implants placed than you’d experience when having a tooth pulled. Find out why your dental implant procedure may be a lot more comfortable than your imagination is letting you believe right now.

Managing Pain During the Procedure

Once you get past that initial prick from the needle, the anesthesia administered through it will deliver all the pain relief you need in order to get through your dental implant placement procedure comfortably.

The numbing effects of the local anesthesia should last you well past your procedure, though Dr. Sohl may add to the dosage if your procedure experiences delays.

A comforting as local anesthesia may be to many people, there are plenty of others who have serious fears of needles. For people with a high level of dental anxiety, Dr. Sohl’s sedation options can make for a much more pleasant experience:

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas): administered through a face mask, nitrous oxide gas, commonly referred to as “laughing gas,” can slow down your racing thought and can even make you put a fear of needles out of your mind ahead of the shot of local anesthesia.

IV sedation: If you don’t have a strong fear of needles, but an unhealthy fear of dental procedures, ask Dr. Sohl about sedatives administered via an IV line. This is the most customizable form of sedation, giving Dr. Sohl the ability to measure out the precise dose needed for body composition and procedure.

Oral sedation: It’s the simplest delivery method of a sedative. However, taking an oral sedative may extend your appointment time a bit as you’ll have to wait for the medication’s onset before you’ll be ready for the procedure.
